Today was 'Birches Green's Green Day'. We spoke about how we can help our planet by being 'green' and the three main words to remember are Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. The children came up with lots of ideas and even wrote their own green promises. The school took part by turning off all the lights and computers in school from 11 o'clock to reduce our energy consumption.

As part of Green Day the children went on a mini beast hunt to see what they could find. We talked about mini beast habitats and where we would find them and off we went on our hunt. We found....earthworms, slugs, snails, spiders, beetles, woodlice, millipedes, ants, greenfly, caterpillar and even a newt.

Here are some of the wonderful Learning Journals we have been working towards all year. They include examples of the children's work and observations that are made by all reception staff. Through independent learning the children can explore their natural curiosity to find things out for themselves; how things work, cause and effect, how to interact and solving problems. The process of learning is an exciting adventure and our learning journals show just how much the children enjoy this adventure.

The children have enjoyed learning some yoga this week. We have been using 'Yoga Pretzels' cards which are really good as they break down all the moves in to easy steps. The yoga pretzels cards teach the children the basics of yoga while also practicing bending, twisting, breathing and relaxing.

Why not try some yourself at home, the children are very good teachers.

Playing outside contributes to keeping children fit and healthy. Today the children helped to build their own trim trail which they thoroughly enjoyed. This simple activity helps to improve health and fitness, including co-ordination, strength, core stability, stamina and agility. We encourage the children to work together, developing social skills and enhancing team work. Playing physical games gives children opportunities to develop confidence in managing movement, challenges such as balancing, climbing, jumping, bending or stretching are all things we practice regularly. Children explore new ways to move, and learn how to control these movements safely, as they join in physical games/activities.

Some of the children had lots of fun using the Jenga pieces to make a domino run. It took a few attempts to get it right but they persisted with the challenge and were very happy with the result.

During Caribbean week we made smoothies. We washed, peeled, chopped, mixed and blended to prepare the fruit. We discussed the changes that we could see occurring. We used our fine motor skills to operate tools and technology.

Role Play Area

Our new role play for this term is 'Travel agents and Beach'. The children have been working in our travel agents booking holidays, taking phone calls and sorting out passports. Once the children have booked their holidays they can jet off to our very own beach. The role play area changes regularly to suit our current topic. So far we have had a home corner, farm shop, story telling (Little Red Hen and The Enormous Turnip), winter wonderland, camping, time machine and Birches Green Sports Relief. The children enjoy getting into character and using all the resources.
